What’s happening today?
The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners is giving another report today on ICE activity in Los Angeles, this time reporting that LAPD responded to a report about a possible kidnapping. While federal authorities were no longer around when the police arrived, the LAPD watch commander “verified that ICE in fact, conducted a Federal Immigration Enforcement Action.” LAPD officials also write that “due to the information obtained during the investigation, no kidnap report was mandated by Department Policy.”

DSA-LA weighs Nithya Raman endorsement, California Working Families Party announces their endorsement of Raman
The Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is gearing up for a possible endorsement in the LA mayor’s race, something that had been hotly debated during the primary. Nithya Raman was among four candidates who joined Saturday’s DSA-LA endorsement forum featuring candidates from four different races, says their communications director Anna Gross.
The chapter’s Electoral Politics Committee, which voted 3 to 2 to recommend that DSA-LA endorse Raman, also gave a report on the conditions of various races. Gross also noted there were more people lining up to argue against than those in favor – echoing reports by others who were at the endorsement forum – although still others disputed those reports, saying that actually, the lines for and against the endorsement were roughly the same.
Passionate debate is expected to be ongoing for now. Online voting by DSA-LA members deciding on whether they want to endorse Raman in the mayoral race begins tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 25, and lasts until next Tuesday, Sept. 1. Gross said that members can continue to submit written statements “arguing for or against any of the candidates seeking endorsements.” Geese Magazine features op-eds from both camps, with a piece backing endorsing Raman that was published Aug. 11, and another that opposes endorsing Raman published Aug. 24.
While all that is happening, Nithya Raman just got the endorsement of a progressive group, the California Working Families Party, which has a larger presence in New York and was the party that Zohran Mamdani voted for himself under, but is making inroads in California and Los Angeles.
